For the photographers amongst you, it's reassuring to note that Mike Ball himself is an avid underwater photographer, so you can rest assured that the setup for photographers is second to none. The dive deck has 3 dedicated camera tables as well as rinse tanks for your valuable equipment.  Spoilsport operates an "open dive deck" policy, which allows guests to plan and dive independently with their buddies. This means that if you want 2 hours in the water getting that "cover shot" of a particularly elusive fish then there is no problem in doing so. However, if you like having the dive sites' best marine life pointed out to you, the experienced Spoilsport crew leads scheduled dives twice daily. Additional guided dives can be arranged with the Spoilsport staff on an ad-hoc basis Sample itinerary Minke Whale Expeditions trip is much more than a ‘dive’ trip. Each passenger is able to partake in Minke Whale behaviour monitoring and research, attend lectures by trained crew on the ecology of the reef and discuss all facets of Minke Whale behaviour, biology and research with research volunteers. What awaits you?, Since commencing Minke Whale Expeditions in 1996 we have had a 98% success rate. The largest pod seen was 28 whales, the longest encounter was 10 hours. Every day has a high probability of dwarf minke encounters. Off to a flying start, Imagine yourself on a spectacular ‘flying start’ to Lizard Island. On the way you will have a birds-eye view of the Great Barrier Reef. Half of your 150 mile flight is at a very low 180 metres (600ft) above the sites you will dive along the Great Barrier Reef’s continental shelf. A truly spectacular beginning to your expedition. Lizard Island, See where the famous English navigator James Cook climbed in 1770 to find a way out of the labyrinth of reefs. Naturalist Joseph Banks lamented that he had too little time to study the wealth of strange creatures he saw in the waters of the Great Barrier Reef. Will you have time to record the wealth of creatures you find? The turquoise chain of Ribbon Reefs, This 55 mile chain of reefs from Lizard Island to Cooktown is the most prized dive region of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef: it is also where the Minke Whales migrate too each year, to breed and calve. This is where you can see more of the Great Barrier Reef’s 1,500 fish and 400 coral species than elsewhere. Diver size fish at the Cod Hole and Cod Wall!, One of the Great Barrier Reefs most amazing phenomenons awaits at the Cod Hole. Swim with incredibly inquisitive ‘small diver size’ potato cod. Tidal currents ensure the coral growth here is very diverse. The Cod Hole’s Shark Alley is a great place to see sleeping white tips in the sand and the occasional grey reef shark. Shallow but fantastic - Challenger Bay, One of the Ribbon Reefs most interesting sites is Challenger Bay, a sloping reef with large sandy patches. The biodiversity here is outstanding, rich with hard and soft corals and all the associated reef fish. Minke Whales are sometimes spotted here and this is a great night diving location. Lighthouse Bommie – Where the Minkes Hang Out, This is one of the best places to see dwarf Minke Whales! These are the smallest of the baleen whales. A fully developed adult is approx 7-9m (25-30ft) in length and 5-7 tonnes in weight. Sleek in appearance these whales have a white band on each fin. Pixie Reef: Pixie Gardens & Vertical Gardens, Pixie Gardens are home to harlequin ghost pipefish, leafy scorpion fish and lace scorpion fish. Vertical Gardens is only accessible on a handful of days every year: this dive site is home to a herd of large green bump head parrotfish. More amazing Ribbon Reef diving. Steve’s Bommie, On the final day, you will find yourself at one of the Great Barrier Reef’s best and most popular sites, Steve’s Bommie. This site is a photographers dream! It’s hard to put into the words the quantity and variety of Great Barrier Reef fish and corals that you will see here. A showcase of the best of the best.

Diving on the Coral Sea and the Ribbon Reefs (Weather dependent) Wake up call, light breakfast available in dining room Dive brief & diving commences Full cooked breakfast Dive brief & diving. “Open decks” accommodate 1-2 dives either am or pm Lunch Dive brief & diving Afternoon tea Night dive brief & dive Dinner   Coral Sea dive sites: Amazing - Holmes Reef - Coral Sea A maze of bommies create tunnels and swim throughs, great to explore. The site provides a great habitat for fish as well as creatures such as octopus, cuttlefish and rock lobsters. Plus it’s a hotspot for grey reef and silvertip sharks, which patrol the shallow reef wall. Nonki Bommie - Holmes Reef - Coral Sea Soft coral and sea fan enthusiasts will love this dive. Nonki Bommie rises to the surface from 35 meters and it is split with a huge crack down the middle filled with giant yellow and orange sea fans. Sharks and other fish are attracted to the site, making for an exciting dive. MV Antonio Tarabocchia - Coral Sea This cargo ship struck the Reef in 1961. The scattered remains include a huge engine block and propeller, which now lie on the gentle sloping terraces of the reef. The clear water, strewn wreckage and abundant fish life, including resident potato cod, makes for a fantastic dive. Fairy Grotto - Osprey Reef - Coral Sea A ‘mountain range’ of big coral bommies, flanked by a steep wall, dropping to over a 1000 meters. The many small caverns and swim throughs at this site give it its name, the largest of which is spacious enough to fit several divers. Admiralty Anchor - Osprey Reef - Coral Sea Named after an anchor lodged midway through a tunnel; it makes for an exciting swim through. A maze of huge towering bommies are home to plenty of fish and a delight to explore. Below them a sheer wall attracts sharks and occasionally manta rays. Dungeons Camp; Dragons - Bougainville - Coral Sea The reef top here is cut with an incredible maze of caves, tunnels and swim throughs– great to poke around to discover fish and other critters. Otherwise, venture beyond the shallows to a wall descending to around 1000m, where you can find sharks and barracuda. Crystal Plateau - Bougainville Reef - Coral Sea The reef top descends to a spectacular terrace of hard corals at 20-30m before edging over into an abyss hundreds of meters deep. Sea fans and soft corals adorn the reef wall where sharks also patrol. False Entrance - Osprey Reef - Coral Sea This site has exciting fish action alongside colourful gorgonian fans, whips and soft corals. Resident barracuda and schooling big eye trevally make for great photo opportunities, and keep an eye out for cruising hammerheads in the blue. North Horn - Osprey Reef - Coral Sea Welcome to shark central! Watch a controlled shark feed with 40-60 grey reef, white- tip reef and silver tip sharks. Keen photographers may have the opportunity to do a private shark shoot dive with a limited number of divers, ensuring clean and up close photos. Western Wall - Osprey Reef - Coral Sea Drift along a sheer wall plummeting over 1000m, cut with overhangs and grottos, and lined with soft corals and fans. Surgeon fish and fusiliers flow up and down the wall like a waterfall. Search for dogtooth tuna, grey reef sharks, barracuda and other pelagics out in the blue. Ribbon Reefs Dive Sites: Snake Pit - Ribbon Reefs – GBR An isolated platform reef shoaling up to form a number of deep coral bommies festooned with multi coloured crinoids. Olive sea snakes are commonly found and are both very curious and very complacent, allowing the more adventurous diver and photographer to get very close! Code Hole - Ribbon Reefs – GBR The Cod Hole is home to a family of ‘diver sized’ potato cod.  Incredibly inquisitive and often boisterous, these beautiful fish will wow you with their presence. Whether taking fantastic close-up photographs or simply hanging out, either way you will be left with an indelible impression. Lighthouse Bommie - Ribbon Reefs - GBR  Big schools of brightly coloured yellow and blue snapper cruise the top of an adjacent reef, while numerous species of anemone fish have also made it their home. This is one of the best locations for encounters with Minke Whales during the season. (June to July) Goggle Gardens - Ribbon Reefs - GBR  Goggle Gardens is a diverse site. Spectacular coral formations rise from the depths of the ancient ‘starky river’ adorning walls, bommies and sandy flats to the reef edge crevasses. Additional guided dives can be arranged with the Spoilsport staff on an ad-hoc basis.

There is no rush or limit placed on your dive time. Standard itineraries usually provide 3 dive sites per day. Normally we have an ‘open deck’ at a single site in the morning and visit 2 sites in the afternoon (this may be reversed). This provides divers with the freedom to dive as much or as little as they want. Those seeking a relaxed holiday may choose to do one dive at each new dive site while keener divers might choose to do up to 5 dives per day.

Top Notch operation from start to finish. Great dives, staff, and meals! Very organized and professional from start to finish. Rooms could have been more climate-controlled (AC kept it quite cool), but a small ding on an overall AMAZING trip. The diving was out of this world...wish I was still down there:)

Overall the experience was incredible. The dive briefs were informative and safety conscious. The open dive deck policy and excellent dive crew made for some amazing self directed diving. The crew as a whole were fun and very helpful. Always willing to have a chat and always offering to help. The dive deck was superb and perfectly designed, the dedicated photo stations and staff help make it a photographers dream. The cabins were small and a bit musty but there isn’t much that can be done about that given the intense schedule and limited downtime. The vessel is showing its age in some ways and the twin hull isn’t always the most comfortable when steaming at top speed but there was always a glass of wine with dinner or plentiful seasickness medication on offer to help. It was an amazing time and I will be diving on the Spoilsport again.
