About Calypso Reef Charters Pty Ltd

Calypso Reef Cruises is a PADI dive boat operating out of Marina Mirage in Port Douglas, Queensland, with daily departures to the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Each trip visits three sites on the Outer Great Barrier Reef, reached aboard fast, stable and comfortable vessels crewed by an experienced team.

Diving and who it suits

Suitable for all ages, the reef trip welcomes snorkellers and scuba divers alike, so families and mixed-ability groups can explore the same waters together. The reef's corals and marine life — including sharks, whales, turtles and ocean fish — can be enjoyed from the surface or below it. Scuba equipment rental is available on board for those who want to dive deeper.

The boat is set up for a comfortable day out, with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, food and drinks, a retail shop and parking at its waterfront base. The crew operates in English, seven days a week. For divers and snorkellers chasing the Great Barrier Reef without the crowds, Calypso makes an easy, all-round choice from Port Douglas.

We were scheduled to go on the "Pure Dive" trip offered by Calypso Reef Charters, but were informed just before the trip that there is a 10 person mimimum requirement for the trip.  Some prior notice would have been useful, so that we could have made contingency plans in the event of the minimum requirement not being met.  Incidentally, there maximum number is 25.  As an alternative, we were offered seats on their much larger dive/snorkel boat "Calypso". Though much larger than the other boat (70 people max.), we were told that they only had 20 people booked for that day. So we opted to go out on the Calypso instead. The dive trip on Calypso was very good and the crew were extremely friendly.  Our dive giude, Andy, was very nice and we did some good dives with him.  The day was very well organized and the dive sites were good. The food was generally good and water was readily-available. With only twenty people on the boat, there was plenty of space, but I am not sure how it would have been with seventy on board.  Might be worth checking prior to booking how many people were going to be on board for your trip. Calypso Charters are a good professional operation and I would recommend them to friends for snorkeling and diving in Port Douglas.
