from NOK 42,000 / person
Plan this trip with AI →Some liveaboards chase warm water. MS Sula heads the other way — a rugged 27-metre vessel built in 1991 that carries divers to the edge of the Earth, where the landscape itself becomes part of the dive briefing.
Every itinerary runs out of Alta and returns to Alta, either as a three-night trip departing Saturday or Tuesday, or as a six-night expedition — one of which sails with marine zoologist Dott. Alessandro de Maddalena aboard for a biology course. From the middle of October to the middle of February, vast amounts of herring draw one of the largest gatherings of orcas in the world, and Sula's crew makes finding them in that remote landscape look easy. Humpback whales share the same water, and dry-suit snorkelling puts you alongside both.
The warm Gulf Stream supports more than 1,400 species here, alongside crystal-clear water, giant kelp forests, wrecks, drop-offs and sandy sea beds. Above the surface there are sea-eagles, and in wintertime, the Northern Lights.
Seven cabins, free onboard Wi-Fi, a hot tub, and nights spent docked at remote islands and tiny Norwegian villages. Rental equipment is available.
By arrival the crew wish the guests welcome onboard and the guests will be served coffee, tea, soft drinks, apple juice, orange juiice, water, fruit and biscuits. After the welcome greetings the guests get their own cabins. Safety briefing and prepare the dry-suits. Further the crew will give you all needed information about the programs, weather report, USEA technique, reporting about the animals, etc.
You will do snorkeling/swimming with orcas and humpbacks The main activity is seeking orcas and do free-diving with orcas. No snorkel experience is needed to join our orca expeditIons We don't use tanks with orcas into the water. The animals are afraid of the bubbles and will then disappear. The animals are friendly, but we never touch them or feed them. You will use dry-suits and our crew will teach how to behave into water with orcas. Onboard there are dry-suits in all standard sizes. A typical day onboard/ orca safari : Wake up at 07:30 am Breakfast at 08:00-08:30 am Boat leaves the harbour about 09:00 am. We go out to the fjord for seeking orcas. Sometimes we see the animals immediately and can start the operation soon. Other days we need hours to find the orcas. When we find the orcas we move to the less boat (dinghy equipped with dry-suit and keep the camera ready for photo action. Normally we are in the dinghy two to three hours and then back to the main ship for eating hot soup, coffee break and lunch. When the darkness is coming we go to the closest bay or harbor to stay the night over. Dinner onboard at 18:00 hrs. If somebody want night-dive there is possibility to do scuba diving in the evenings after seeking orcas. Scuba diving for well experienced divers only! Need to have 30 dives with dry suit. All diving arrangements are included in our offer/price. There are weights and bottles onboard. Single 12 liter 200 bar and 15 liter 200 bar. Relax time together with the guests on Sula or we have walk trip onshore to see the Northern Lights if good conditions or have good time in the hot tub. One evening with Hydrophone for listening to the sound of orcas and humpbacks (if good conditions). USEA Lectures with USEA Certification / Lecturer Orca Expert Pierre Robert de Latour. (Approx. one hour per evening). USEA is the network for those who care about the respect of the comfort and the wild nature of marine mammals. Approved by scientists working in the field of marine mammals, USEA interactions are much better than enforced encounters for both diver and marine mammal. On board the boat during ORCA EXPEDITION, guided by the best specialists you will learn with USEA techniques how to come close and interact in the best conditions with orcas and large whales. Successful USEA interaction allows you to be USEA Diver, registered in the network with an unique number. You will have your own Certification. How many times you will be into the water with the animals depends of weather and windy conditions, but you can expect from 2-4 times or even more a day if good conditions.
Unfortunately our trip has come to an end and we have to say goodbye, but we hope to see you again soon!
