Plan this trip with AI →On Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, Free Way (Freeway Sado) guides divers through waters known for their seaweed forests and the friendly sheepshead wrasse — a grouper wrasse that comes close and has become something of a signature of Sado. Divers also seek out macro life here, from juvenile blobfish to panfish, making it a favourite of photographers who love close-up shots of sea slugs and other small creatures.
Spring brings spreading seaweed forests and proliferating small creatures; summer into autumn sees fish populations grow, with dynamic boat dives over rocky terrain and schools of fish; winter turns the water clear and the sea calm. Diving is mainly by boat, with beach diving offered on request, and guides pick the best spots for the day's conditions and the creatures you hope to see.
As a PADI Resort with 4 PADI Instructors, an onsite classroom and its own dive boat, Free Way favours a relaxed, small-group style. Careful guidance in English makes it well suited to those diving Sado for the first time — or trying diving at all.
