About Island Ventures

Key Largo sits at the heart of the Florida Keys, and the diving here rewards curiosity. As Island Ventures puts it, the Keys offer such a wide variety of scenery and sea life that it would take years to see everything. Every reef area delivers a different experience and a different view, so no two days underwater look quite the same.

Reefs, ledges and wrecks

Beyond the many reefs and ledges, the local wrecks rank among the most popular dive sites in the area — plenty to keep divers of every interest coming back. Because these are living reefs, corals are living creatures, and divers are encouraged to make every effort to help keep the waters pristine.

Island Ventures runs a PADI dive boat backed by a team of 7 PADI instructors, making it a solid home base for anyone wanting to learn or log more dives in Key Largo. Whether you're building skills or simply exploring, this Florida Keys operation is set up to get you out on the water.

We visited Key Largo in July 2010 to do some diving and lobster hunting. There is a dive shop every 100yards along the overseas Highway, so finding a shop is no problem. I searched PADI shops and then went by price and how many they said they put on a boat. This shop said a max 8 on a boat. My wife and I are advanced divers and my daughter is OW certified. We had another family traveling with us that is all OW certified and their yougest turned 10 while on the trip and wanted to do a resort course. Our first day of diving was an easy one to get my daughter and the other OW divers back into it and the resort course done. Next day was just wife and I hunting lobster during mini season. They took us to great locations and gave us some pointers, which turned out to be great advice. Only 4 on the boat that day. Lobster for dinner! The next day we wanted to dive the Speigal Grove wreck. They only had us sign up and they still took us! The wreck was great; wish we could have gone back a couple more times and probably will some time. We also wanted to see Christ of the Abyss statue and since we were the only divers on the boat, they took us there as our second tank. The other family traveling with us went the next day for another easy dive and also had a great experience. The only downside, which seems to be the norm in the US is that they did not send a guide with us which we like to show the good fish areas and point out the local flair. The divemasters on all of the trips were knowledgable and safe and concerned about the reefs staying healthy.
