About Rodney Fox

The Rodney Fox liveaboard, operated by Rodney Fox Expeditions, sails Australia's waters for something few boats can offer: extreme shark tours to the Neptune Islands. Departing round-trip from Port Lincoln, its itineraries are built to give you maximum viewing time with great white sharks, with unrivalled access to cage dives, wonderful land tours, and the chance to spot sea lions along the way.

Into the world's only ocean-floor cage

Qualified divers can descend to 20 meters in the world's only ocean-floor cage, dropping into a magical world you'll never forget. Selected trips are hosted by Rodney Fox and Andrew Fox, and one itinerary even features a course in shark biology led by an onboard expert — world-class guidance from the very people who helped shape shark diving.

Carrying up to 18 guests, the boat keeps you well looked after between dives with full board, snacks after every dive, soft and hot drinks, and Australian wine with dinner. White shark experts are onboard throughout to share these wild, pristine waters.

Great White Shark Expedition5 nights · 10 dives
  1. 1
    Day 1

Meet at the Marina Hotel, Port Lincoln Safety Briefing, Crew Introduction, Necessary Dive Paperwork, Cabin allocation and ship orientation will take place before departing the Harbour. During the journey, please take this opportunity to familiarize yourselves with the vessel and make yourself comfortable.  We then depart for the night’s anchorage at a location near our next day’s activities, with a meal or snack provided along the way or upon our destination. Please Note: This is a sample itinerary and nº of dives, dive sites, etc. may be subject to change due to weather conditions and other unforseeable factors

  2. 2
    Day 2

Option One:  Wake up to a Neptune Island sunrise   and look out for seal predations, which are typically more common in the early hours around dawn. Or you may just choose to snooze in for a late breakfast, or even until we knock on your door with news of the first sharks arriving.  Our priority is generally for everyone to see the sharks in the surface cage before we descend deeper with our SCUBA certified diving guests in the ocean floor cage. Depending on our depth, the shark activity, the group mix and each diver preferences we can generally accommodate multiple surface and Ocean Floor cage Dives each day. Option Two:  It’s worth getting up at day-break to see the spectacular scenery of the Thorny Passage and nearby Hopkins Island where we expect to have frolicking sea lions eager to meet us. For an hour or so in the morning there is an option to snorkel/dive with these adorable creatures in shallow sheltered waters. Then, time and weather permitting we can either try another dive location, or perhaps make haste to anchor down at the Neptune Islands, where we’ll no doubt be eager to spot a few dorsal fins.

  3. 3
    Day 3

The cages hit the water, ready for action!  At the Neptune’s hop in the tender boat, check out the Fur Seals and the odd elusive sea lion and go walking on the Neptune Islands. Here, there are many bird species and a few reptiles to watch out for. At night download the pictures relax, unwind, talk about the day while feasting on the buffet, engage in the Great White Shark Research Talk (really interesting, with some fantastic photography), check out the amazing night-sky, and retire to your cabin ready for the next days adventures.  This live-aboard itinerary gives so many more opportunities to immerse your self in the beauty of the Neptune Islands, listening to the sounds of the seals with a chilled glass of white. There is plenty of time to chill out and rest. Hit the hay when you feel like it... and get up when you feel like it.

  5. 5
    Day 5

By now your shark identification skills will be finely tuned.  After a final morning shark dive, Leave the Neptune Islands around midday and enjoy a celebratory local South Australian ‘wine on the bow’ usually with common dolphins joining us for company back to Port.  We try and schedule   the sea lion swim/dive day on the last day as this dive is less than 5m deep, any scuba divers flying out that evening have no concerns with flying out later that evening.  Alternatively, depending on how the trip has unfolded so far and the weather, you may look to depart the Neptune Islands even earlier this day and stop off to swim/dive with Australian Sea lions at Hopkins Island on the way back into Port.   One day during the tour is often chosen with other species when conditions are the least favorable for shark diving at the Neptune Islands. Any of these options are completely weather dependent and also subject to group wishes. Our priority is always to maximize productivity with sharks. The sea lion swim/dive day is usually taken at the first dive day or the end either while either en route to the Neptune Islands or en route to our return back to Port. Arrive back in Port Lincoln

There is plenty time to chill out and rest with heaps of games on board, as well as books and videos and sometimes host a night of shark quizzes and fun – it’s really up to you how you spend the evening. Hit the hay when you feel like it. More time to spend Surface and Ocean Floor diving – there is no time limit in the cages, as long as everyone has their fair share. You can also do some Shark and Wildlife watching from the observation deck, relax with a book, work on your tan – anything that floats your boat. Leave the Neptune Islands and enjoy some local South Australian ‘drinks on the bow’ usually with common dolphins joining us for company We arrive at Port Lincoln in the evening ready for disembarking  Unfortunately our trip has come to an end and we have to say goodbye, but we hope to see you again soon!

Overall a fantastic experience. All staff were outstanding, friendly and knowledgeable with our safety their priority. Our cabin was a little noisy due to its proximity to the boats generator, but we were usually too tired to notice for too long. Boat is a little tired looking but very comfortable. Thanks for the great Rodney Fox experience. David and Coops
