    Day 2

Dragon walk on Rinca Island Komodo offers a wide range of diving experiences: high-voltage current dives, gentle drift dives, cliff dives along walls of colorfull corals, dives around monumental boulders, cave dives and swim-throughs, seamounts and pinnacles, and sandy slopes composed of both black and white sand. Komodo National Park is an exciting, rewarding, and sometimes very challenging place to dive. The National Park is situated in between the cooler Indian Ocean, South, and the warmer Banda Sea, North. As the tides change, great amounts of water are exchanged and funneled through the narrow straits between these islands where nutrient rich waters are brought up from the depths, providing a constant supply of food for the reefs and fishes here. All this action can bring in more agile hunters like pods of dolphins or the occasional orcas and whales. This ‘flow’ of water also functions as a temperature regulator, ensuring that corals are pristine and un-affected by ‘bleaching’ caused by above normal sea temperatures in other areas of the world. Komodo dive sites Batu Balong is a huge pinnacle that reaches a depth of 250 feet (75 m), and is therefore primarily a wall dive in pristine conditions and with exceptionally strong currents. Huge Napoleon Wrasse and Oceanic Whitetip sharks can be seen in this site. Manta Alley consists mainly of several channels that attract manta rays. The rocks are lined with bright orange soft corals, which are now home to a wide variety of invertebrates including harlequin shrimp. The channels lie in a depth of 60 feet (18 m), where you can spot Giant Trevallies, Barracuda, and black spotted Ribbontail Ray. Cannibal Rock is one of the best dive sites in Komodo. It is a beautiful site with green turtles, pygmy seahorses on purple gorgonian fans, blue anemones and incredible shoals of fusiliers. Makasser Reef (Manta Point) is definitely the place to go to spot Mantas, although it is easier to see them at the high tide and in strong current condition. In this strange place, that looks poor of species at first glance you can actually meet sea turtle, white or black tip sharks and huge trevallies. Recently bamboo sharks, uncommon in this area, have been spotted here Wainilu: chance to see mandarin fish just before nightfall. Excellent spot to meet rare species like Harlequin Shrimp; Nudibranchs; sea hare; Bobtail squid; Octopus; Devilfish one of the waspfish family; pictured Dragonet; fingered Dragonet etc. Lighthouse: drop-off, strong current, for experienced divers only. Selection of possible animals: pelagic zone fish live (all sorts of sharks, tunas, trevallys etc.); known as a grouper spawning site & occasionally large quantities of very big groupers.

Dive sites Batu Balong is a huge pinnacle that reaches a depth of 250 feet (75 m), and is therefore primarily a wall dive in pristine conditions and with exceptionally strong currents.

Safety Briefing, Crew Introduction, Necessary Dive Paperwork, Cabin allocation and ship orientation will take place before departing the Harbour. During the journey to our first dive site for a check dive, please take this opportunity to familiarize yourselves with the vessel and make yourself comfortable. Few dives in Ambon Ambon is an evolving muck diving mecca and already rivals the much better known Lembeh Strait in Sulawesi. You will be astonished by the sheer number of interesting species that muck diving in Ambon can produce. Critters both rare and (so far) unique to this region choose to make a home in the rubble and muck on the slopes of Ambon’s expansive bay. Come and enjoy the resident Rhinopias species (scorpionfish), the Pegasus sea moths, countless varieties of frog fish, seahorses, Flamboyant Cuttlefish, frog fish, ghost pipefish and Stargazers that populate the sites around Ambon. Please Note: This is a sample itinerary and nº of dives, dive sites, etc. may be subject to change due to weather conditions and other unforseeable factors

The Maluku Islands (or Moluccas) are also commonly referred to as the Spice Islands. They encompass many islands, estimated at over 1,000, of which the better known are Ternate, Halamahera, Misool, Ambon, the Banda Islands and Wetar. The reefs are caked with soft and hard corals and are home to a rainbow of reef fish with everything from wrasse to juvenile emperor angel fish. Macro photographers will be delighted to find mandarinfish and the unusual looking ambon scorpion fish which is indigenous to these islands. Huge shoals of mobula rays gliding over the reefs They aren’t the only rays and sharks in this area either, eagle rays are a common sight as well as white tipped reef sharks patrolling over the reefs. The most spectacular experience in the Banta Sea, if you are fortunate enough, is to dive with schooling hammerhead sharks. Adding to the excitement, spinner dolphins, orcas, and blue, pilot, and humpback whales can also be seen here on a liveaboard dive safari Dive sites The coral gardens at Nusa Laut are some of the prettiest, with lush greens and turquoise vases. It is absolutely worth bringing along a torch to shine out all the vibrant colours and inspect tucked-away corners. Shoals of anthias are joined by surgeonfish and the occasional pipefish. Scorpionfish are somewhere slightly sheltered, while barracuda patrol the skirts of the reef. This is another very healthy site that attracts hammerheads. Koon Island Small Island, the name of the dive site says it all: "Too many fishes". With the right current the diving could be unforgettable, millions of fish, schooling jacks, barracudas, sharks. Manuk, another volcano rising from the Banda Sea is situated far into open sea. Darwin might have run its research on evolution here as well. Despite lower biodiversity on land, the walls below the see are amazing. The night dive surprises many with shrimp and crabs. Especially the shy Saron shrimp can be observed frequently. Sharks, sea snakes, mackerels, tunas and barracudas are seen in the blue. Middle Point: A rubble slope with a lot of waving soft corals on the top and special sponges that look like grayish leaves. There is a large coral block with leaffishes and lots of cardinalfishes on about 17m. Further down you ca spot the Halimeda Ghostpipefishes (Solenostomus halimeda) nearly invisible among the Halimeda plants. Part of this dive site is covered with the colorful poisonous sea urchins, some with Coleman shrimps, some with Zebra crabs or both. Silale dive site offers scuba divers colorful elephant ear sponges along with brightly colored leaffish and nudibranchs. Sea cucumbers, cowfish, and lizardfish can also be found here. Laha on the Northern coast of Ambon is a very big muck diving site. The site is also renowned for the overwhelming numbers of eel species including blue ribbon, chain moray, snowflake, and many more. The highly venomous blue-ringed octopus, mimic octopus and wonderpus are all frequent visitors. Fingered dragonets, stargazers and crocodile fish can be spotted camouflaging themselves into the muck, while leaf scorpion fish tend to congregate near the coral bommies. Misool has prettiest soft corals reefs, as well as multiple pinnacles surrounded by masses of schooling fish, barracudas, jacks and snappers. Pulau Koon is a small island, half way between Raja Ampat and the Banda Islands. Walls covered in soft corals, and sandy slopes with hard coral bommies. But the most interesting feature of this island is the amount of schooling fish and pelagic, barracudas, bigeye trevallies, aggregation of red snappers, pompanos, batfish, and giant groupers.

Raja Ampat Over 1,200 fish species. It is believed that the region will soon receive protected area status. The term "Frontier Diving" seems to have been invented for the Raja Ampat islands. To visit these waters is to feel at the edge of the earth. South East Misool, the coral reefs of the Fam Island group, the fish and manta rays of the Dampier straight, the critter diving at Batanta and in Aljui Bay, and of course the great karst formations of the Wayag Archipelago up North. Hard and soft corals compete for space on reefs that are bursting with life and colour. Swarms of small fish such as damsels, fusiliers and anthias mill about on the reef flats, while not too far away the large schools of tuna, trevally and mackerel congregate. Batfish, surgeonfish and barracuda aggregate around jettys and reef points, while angel and butterflyfish decorate both the reef flats and jagged coral towers that are home to abundant marine life. Large fish species include napoleon wrasse, bumpheads and giant sweetlips, and being in shark sanctuary not a day goes by where divers don’t spot one of the many species of reef shark in the area. And of course, there are the manta rays: reef mantas at nearby cleaning stations, the majestic oceanic manta in open water, and during the right season any given dive site may yield magnificent mantas gliding by. There are really no words to describe diving in Raja Ampat, it must be experienced and is truly unforgettable Dive sites Mios Kun situated on Dampier Strait, at the southern entrance to Kabui Bay. It consists of a coral column that plunges up to 25 meters deep. It is recommended for beginners or those at an intermediate level, in light of its currents, which are usually light but can occasionally be rather strong. You can expect to see many yellow snappers on the reef and, if you dive down a little farther Wobbegong sharks. There are also seahorses, fusiliers, trevallies, groupers, giant clams, morays and much more marine life. Blue Magic it is a chunk of reef submerged just 10 meters below the surface, so boats often use it as a safety measure, stopping just above it so they will know exactly where to dive. In Blue Magic the current is strong, so it requires an advanced diving level. Throughout its 30 meters of depth you can see large schools of fish like barracudas, red snappers, surgeonfish, tunas and mackerels. There is also a cleaning station in one of the eastern bommies near the surface, where you can see manta rays. Manta Sandy northwest of Arborek Island. It’s a dive appropriate for everyone, since it is only 18 meters deep, making it ideal for beginners. The currents are variable. In this area there is a large concentration of plankton which, together with the currents, attracts the manta rays. We have seen up to 20 manta rays in one dive. Batu Lima it means ‘five rocks’ and it is situated in front of our resort, in Dampier Strait, at the southwest entrance to Kabui Bay. It has a diving depth of up to 24 meters with variable currents. Made up of five rocks as its name indicates, they are connected and you can swim between them at high tide. One highlight of Batu Lima is the size of the coral fans. Just a few meters from the surface you can see the beautiful purple colored corals, which many people photograph. You can also see whips of black coral and bushes. But don’t worry; in Batu Lima there are also fish. You can see trevallies hunting other fish or even whitetip and blacktip sharks. Mike’s Point situated in Dampier Strait on the Southeast tip of the Gam coast. It is an area very distinct from the others, due to its history. During the Second World War the U.S. Air Force confused it with a Japanese ship and bombed it. The impacts on the rock created grooves in the wall, sort of like caves, where you can now dive. Please keep in mind that it is an area with strong currents and you can descend up to 30 meters so, as I said before, you must be at an advanced level for this dive. At Mike’s Point, you can see sweet lips tropical carangidi or larger fish like whitetip sharks, tunas or eels. But not everything is on the ocean floor; in the shallower areas, there is a complete coral garden where you can find sea serpents, tortoises, carpet sharks or walking fish.

We had a great trip in Raja Ampat on the Lady Denok. Egi and his Team took great care of us and did a fantastic job in every way. Diving was awesome and we felt very safe on every dive, briefings were thorough and detailed. The room was spacious and beds were comfortable. The only small bad thing was, that after a while the engine oil smell built up in the room, but the crew was very helpful with this problem. We enjoyed the trip so much and the attention to detail from the staff was fabulous. Egi even organized a drop off and pickup on another island for us. We can only recommend lady Denok and would love to join the crew for an adventure again in the future.
