Derawan is an archipelago with the main islands being Derawan, Maratua, Kakaban and Sangalaki, forming small and remote atolls with sandy banks. This special place is considered the second most biodiverse place in the world. Derawan Islands are part of the Coral Triangle, which features 872 species of reef fish, 507 species of coral, and invertebrates, including protected species (5 giants clam species, 2 sea turtles, coconut crab, etc.). The diving offers abundant marine life with a huge variety of coral reef dives, caves, walls, and lagoons, including a jellyfish lake visit. Guests will see sharks, schooling barracudas, mantas, whalesharks and macro life. Derawan also contains the largest green turtle nesting site in Indonesia, making dives with turtles quite common. Derawan Island provide a good mix of both muck sites and drift dives. The muck sites attract all sorts of macro species, including the highly venomous blue-ringed octopus, frogfish of various colours, harlequin shrimp and ghost pipefish. The drift sites attract numerous large pelagic species, including several sharks. Oceanic whitetip and blacktip reef sharks, as well as leopard and nurse sharks can all be seen here. Great schools of barracuda are also a common sighting. Many sites around the islands have yet to be visited by divers, and you are likely to complete several exploratory dives while on your Derawan liveaboard dive trip. Several hundred caves are estimated to be totally unexplored, providing the experienced cave diver a somewhat exciting prospect. These caves typically originate on the islands, and have exits on the reefs themselves. 4 dives in Sangalaki Island

    Day 1

This trip combines the best dive sites of Banda Sea, and South Raja Ampat (Misool). The great highlights are the amazing macro sites in Ambon Bay, large pelagics in Banda Islands, manta cleaning stations near Mansuar and the huge schools of fish near Farondi. The Dampier Straight separates the Birdhead Peninsula from Waigeo and Mansuar. The name comes from the Dutch colonial times. It refers to the shape of the peninsula on the map, but it is also a paradise for many rare bird species. Here the Pacific Ocean meets the Halmahera Sea, with an explosion of marine life. With regular strong currents, big fish feel especially comfortable. Manta rays, reef sharks, different schools of mackerel, tuna and barracuda are seen again and again. Diving in the endless maze of the islands of Misool is very special. It is paradise for macro enthusiasts, but encounters with larger fish such as manta rays happens. Misool is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world with fish, corals, sponges, soft corals, shrimps, crabs and countless nudibranchs and other invertebrates. Huge schools of sardines are a definite highlight. Soft corals and sea fans (diameter of 3-4 meters) in all sizes and colors dominate the underwater landscape. Nusa Laut. Varied reef scapes with beautiful coral gardens and loads of fish. Schools of surgeon fish, big eye jacks, and a variety of reef fish including barracudas sweeten the dive. With some luck you can even see hammerhead sharks. Another highlight is the night dive under the pier, where we "hunt" critters. Angler fish, scorpion fish, pipe fish and many other creatures are on display. Banda Neira is the main island of "Banda Islands", which are part of the Maluku archipelago. The "Banda Islands" consists of 10 small volcanic islands. Visit the old fortress of the Dutchman on Banda Neira, or climb a volcano is part of our program. Over 20 years ago lava flowed into the sea and formed a hard coral garden which is amazing! Everything a diver could wish for can be seen in this canal which flows towards the Banda Sea. It guarantees a unique spectacle of schooling fish; giant groupers, large schools of barracudas, snapper, surgeon fish, sweet lips in the midst of beautiful coral. This is an underwater photographers haven, there are so many things to photograph, it becomes confusing. The sometimes violent currents cannot guarantee the best visibility, but there is a big chance to see large fish such as manta rays, sharks and even mobulas.

    Day 2

This route offers such a wealth of biodiversity starting with the spectacularly beautiful reefs around the Raja Ampat area and traveling through the Misool to Halmahera area and on to the critter heaven of the Lembeh Straits. The cruise runs between Sorong Papua and Bitung in North Sulawesi or return. There are 4 key areas dived; Raja Ampat, Halmahera, Tifore (an island between Halmahera and Lembeh), and Lembeh. Raja Ampat – The trip starts in the area around Waigeo (north Raja Ampat), where we spend 2 days, mostly around the Strait of Dampier (including the manta dive). Then we move to Misool (south Raja Ampat), and spend another 2 days. Pulau Pisang – These are a set of 2 islands and 2 small rocks between the areas of Misool and Halmahera. We spend a whole day here as the diving is terrific. Sloping reefs with healthy soft and hard corals and “very fishy” diving with schooling Bumpheads parrot fish, zillions of Blue Trigger fish and squadrons Dogtooth Tuna passing by. Strait of Patinti – Strait in the south of Halmahera. We spend another awesome day of diving here. There are 2 pinnacles in the strait that are full of fish, healthy corals and quite a few blacktip reef sharks. Excellent diving. Tifore – A small island between Halmahera and Lembeh. Great diving around a submerged reef about half a mile from the island. The reef has a wall on the south and east and sloping reef on the west . The wall and reef offer good dives however the main attractive is looking into the blue ! Massive schools of Barracudas – hundreds and hundreds of barracudas that have made Tifore their home. Really quite amazing ! Lembeh Strait – 2 dives on the last day – world famous for it’s muck and critter diving – long lazy dives offering photographers some of the most weird and wonderful marine creatures in the world. We encourage our divers to use a shore based resort to spend a few days in this area for a great treat either before or after your Mermaid Liveaboard’s cruise.

I HAD A FATASTIC TIME . LOTS OF DIVING -NO PRESSURE WONDERFUL FOOD . THE CREWE MADE THE TRIP THEY WERE KIND AND HAPPY. THEY REALLY WANTED TO MAKE OUR TRIP SPECIAL AND IT WAS. THE DIVE GUIDED WERE FIRST CLASS WITHOUT BEING OVERBEARING. I LOVED IT SO MUCH I AM RETURNING TO THE BOAT IN AUGUST FOR A DIFFERENT PART OF THEIR INDONESIAN AREA. . I STAYED IN THE CHEAPEST CABIN WHICH I LIKED SO I CANNOT REALLY COMMENT ON THE CABINS UPSTAIRS. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED

I cannot really fault the Raja Ampat Aggressor at all. It is really a great boat and I had a fantastic trip. Remi the Cruise Director and the wonderful, friendly Indonesian crew provided first rate service throughout. Food was brilliant and the diving side of it was safe and highly effective, including reliable nitrox mix. Just two minor issues. 1 some night dive locations seemed barren. For me, it would be more interesting to alternate with a 4th late day dive 2 the ladder to get back on the inflatable at the end if the dive is not the easiest The Aggressor is not a cheap boat, but you get what you pay for and I thought it was worth every $
