Dive in Sorong - Misool - Penemu - Dampier - Sorong Dives : 3 day dives + 1 night dive Misool island Misool island is known for its soft corals, shallow mangrove areas (be aware of some saltwater crocodile in this area), reef fish, mantas and pelagic species, which will make for some excellent wide-angle photography. Some sloping walls with colourful soft coral carpet also become houses for some small critters, from ghost pipefish to harlequin shrimp and pygmy seahorses. Misool also has at least three ponds with unpoisoned jellyfish, all in Misool area. Penemu There are many dive walls with slopes that are covered in soft and hard corals. There are many different crabs, sea spiders, clams, shrimps, and sea urchins amongst the corals as well as many varieties of reef fish. On the southern part of the island, there is a dive site called South Penemu. This has a fantastic pinnacle covered in soft corals and anemones of all different colours. The pinnacle is home to large schools of fusiliers, jack fish, and batfish. Giant trevallies are also spotted here along with snappers, and rainbow runners. In the shallower parts, there will be larger groups of sweetlips and lionfish, as well as many other reef fish of the area. The island has many more dive sites, many of which have not yet been explored. It is fast becoming a more popular spot for liveaboard dive boats for this reason as divers are beginning to explore the island further. Dampier strait The position that the Dampier Strait is in means that the currents are plankton rich and full of fish life. The reefs are excellent because like the rest of the Raja Ampat islands the Dampier Strait is inside of the coral triangle. The dive sites are normally caked with corals full of critters and beautiful reef fish. Dampier also enjoys particularly good conditions for divers to see some bigger animals. Mantas are frequently seen here on liveaboard dive cruises, sometimes in large numbers. It is not unusual to see groups of them swimming in the current, mouths wide open feeding on plankton. They also come down close to the reefs which makes this a top photography and videography opportunity. Mantas aren’t the only bigger fish on offer here with white and black tipped reef sharks to be found sleeping on the reefs. During the day is a good time to look out for them hiding under rocks with their conspicuous tails sticking out. Wobbegong sharks can also be seen camouflaging themselves on the bottom, resting during the day. They are a fascinating shark and their strange bearded chins make a great macro shot.

I assume most divers considering a liveaboard have liveaboard experience. If not, you should know that Indonesia, the Phillipines, Taiwan, etc have many ships retrofitted from sea going sailing schooners. They are wood and very comfortable. This ship was a dream for me. All the charm of a sailing ship with modern facilities for air con, plumbing in room and plenty of deck space to relax. The crew was extremely knowledgeable and eager to point things out on dives. The dives worked like clockwork and your tanks were always set up and ready to go. Liveaboards have tight quarters but are very comfortable. Our itinerary kept us busy. The dive deck was spacious and the camera enthusiasts had plenty of room to work. The food was of local origin and was delicious. The only reason I gave it a 4 was that it was not sit down service in the evening which is absolutely preferable to me but I thought it should be noted if it is important to you. I will return to this boat and her sisters again (and again and again). A shout out to Mark who kept an eye on me the entire time as I was pretty much the weak link :) . Lastly, if you are contemplating a liveaboard for the first time, go for it. Even if you are single. Divers are divers and social awkwardness simply doesn't exist. You will get only encouragement and gain friends for life. (Even if you aren't friendly!)
