About Sea Hunter

The Sea Hunter began life as a commercial diving support boat before being reborn as a striking dive vessel. Purpose-built for long-range expeditions, this stable, robust 36-metre craft is designed to reach far-flung destinations such as Coco Islands, exploring some of the richest pelagic waters in the world from its home base at Punta Uva, Costa Rica.

Diving and courses

As a PADI Dive Boat offering enriched air (Nitrox), the Sea Hunter suits divers ready to venture beyond the everyday. A dedicated camera lounge doubles as a classroom for diving theory, so there's room to build skills and refine underwater photography between dives.

The surrounding waters explode with life, from white tip reef sharks and schooling hammerheads to dolphins, mantas and marbled rays, giant moray eels, sailfish and the occasional whale shark. Green turtles, silky sharks, marlin and large schools of jacks and tuna round out the encounters.

On board you'll find warm-water showers, a battery charging station, Fish ID and diving books, and Wi-Fi (paid). English and Spanish are spoken throughout.

Ever since I came back I've been wondering if this was all a dream. Returning from amazing adventures always leaves a bittersweet aftertaste, but this is something different. I arrived in San José on the 16; Iota had just recently hit Nicaragua and the skies were overcast everywhere. We crossed under squally weather, but during those 36 hours all the divers got to know each other and the amazing crew. Once in the island, as soon as we backrolled for the check dive, the skies opened and Coco's wore the sun on its sleeve for almost the whole trip. All dives were exemplary; as we used to say, even the worst dive was superb. Tiger sharks, White tips, Black tips, Silver tips, Galápagos... Even a friendly Silky nosed around on one of our safety stops. A Mobula ray, a Giant Manta, enormous, mind-boggling banks of Big Eye Jacks, Almaco, and Jordan Snappers. Spotted Eagle Rays, Moray eels... Dolphins. Waterfalls. Freaking rainbows everywhere! I wouldn't blame you if you thought I was making this up, or at least exaggerating... I feel ya. It WAS dreamlike. A carnival on every single dive. And the ship! The Sea Hunter and its crew wil forever remain in my heart: the happy mood, the warm-hearted ribbing, the friendliness. The divers were a perfect mix of Costa Rica, USA, Caribbean (myself), and Great Britain. The immediate chemistry helped us forged long-lasting friendships. I was supposed to sail on July on the Argo, but Covid-19 had other plans. And I'm glad, because circumstances placed me on the right boat, at the right time, with the right people. In summary, Coco's matched the Sea Hunter's and our energy, putting on an amazing show and making this a memorable expedition.

First class diving experience with great dive masters and crew. 21 dives, 20 with hammerhead schools, 16 with tiger sharks, white tips, black tips, silver tips, Galápagos sharks plus huge schools of big eyed jacks, yellowfin Tina and also a pacific many’s flyby.

Cocos Island is one of greatest dive sites left in the world. You will need gloves that can withstand prolonged rock abrasion in heavy currents. Besides holding onto rocks while watching the sharks go by, you will be drifting with the current in the open sea. In my opinion, a diver must have at least an advanced open water certification. A rescue diver certification would be best. You also need a nitrox certification. The water was warm and a hood wasn't needed. I took a heavy 5 mm suit but should have taken my 3 1/2 mm full suit instead. We saw hundreds of hammerheads, a tiger shark, a whale shark, and thousands of other fish. I am 75 years old, and the crew did everything in their power to make my trip great. Our panga driver gave me all the help I needed to get my gear into and out of the water. My fellow divers were the best. The food, boat, and the rest of the crew were fantastic too. It's the dive of a lifetime. Go for it.
